Lucia Beach, the Panoramic Route with its views of the sea coast, flamboyan trees, the Spanish lighthouse at Punta Tuna built in 1890, El Cocal Beach,a popular surfing spot, Palmas del Mar Resort with two 18 hole golf courses, hotel, equestrian center, many restaurants, and a marina where snorkling, diving, and fishing trips can be arranged. The ruins of the Roig Sugar Mill, a historic sugar processing plant, are also here in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico.
Nearby Fajardo has a small airport with air service to the Virgin Islands and the Puerto Rican out islands of Culebra and Vieques. Ferry service is also available here to Culeba and Vieques. Puerto Rico's largest resort, nearby El Conquistador Hotel has sumptuous dining, shopping and a casino. For the nature lover Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Preserve ,opened in 1991, contains sandy and rocky beaches, lagoons, dry and mangrove forests, coral reefs, and thalassia beds. El Faro, a lighthouse built in 1890, one of only two operating lighthouses on the island, is located within the preserve. Just beyond, down Hwy 3 is the world renowned El Yunque Tropical Rain Forest where a new interpretive center and hiking trails entice the tourist to walk to waterfalls and turrets. With an early start, it is possible to hike in El Yunque, in the morning and cross Hwy 3 to Luquillo Beach for an afternoon of sun, sand and swimming.
Ponce, only 90 minutes away following the scenic coastal route, has something for everyone. From the Victorian red and black Parque de Bombas firehouse, the Taino Indian ruins at Tibes Ceremonial Park, the Ponce Art Museum, the Castle Serralles constructed in the 1930's, to Speed and Splash, a new water and racing theme park.
Don't forget San Juan is just an hour away. All the attractions of Old San Juan by day and night, world class shopping at Plaza las Americas, the Bacardi Rum Tour, Estadio Hiram Bithorn where the Montreal Expos have played, the Botanical Gardens, and Paseo de Diego, the largest pedestrian market in San Juan. We always stop in old San Juan at Hotel El Convento in their treed courtyard for a snack or a drink. It is a reminder to slow down and enjoy the best of Puerto Rico.
